Noted children’s musician, author coming to Rockwall library

Jim Gill

(Rockwall) July 6, 2012 – Nationally acclaimed children’s musician and author Jim Gill will be in Rockwall for two days later this month as part of his national Family Room Tour.

His visit will address two important aspects of childhood literacy – an entertaining concert and educational experience for families; and a workshop geared toward teachers, librarians and other people who work with children.

Gill has unique credentials among children’s artists.  He is a child development specialist, having completed his graduate studies in child development at the Erikson Institute of Chicago with a special emphasis on the study of play.

On Thursday, July 19, he will perform in two Family Concerts at 10:15 am and 11:15 am.  The family sing-along concert will have both original songs and audience participation.  Because younger children usually have a harder time focusing for 45 minutes, the programs will probably be most enjoyed by ages 4 and up.  Families are invited to bring a picnic blanket or towel to sit on during the concert.

Seating is limited to 75 children for each concert.  While the concerts are free, a ticket is required for each child and will be available starting at 9 am on July 19.

On Friday, July 20, Gill will conduct  a Workshop for Teachers, Librarians, and others who work with young children.  His goal in this workshop is to emphasize the many connections between musical play and literacy within the various areas of early childhood development.  These connections become clear as he shares clever word play and rhymes in the context of active movement games.

Gill has shared his expertise with organizations such as Head Start, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the National Association for Family Child Care and, most recently, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Lindsey Snelling of the Rockwall County Library says, “Librarians in youth services and early childhood educators will be sure to find many new ideas to enhance story times and children’s programming.  Jim will share music and play that can be used with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and parents.”

These FREE concerts and workshop are provided through a donation from Friends of the Rockwall County Library.

Persons wishing to attend the workshop should contact Ms. Snelling at no later than Monday, July 16, 2012.  For additional information about Jim Gill, visit his website at jimgill.com.
