(Irving) July 31, 2012– A new support group for single moms has formed in Irving, welcoming single moms and their children to join them for free food, fun and friendship. The kickoff meeting will be Friday, Aug. 24.
Single Moms Care and Support of Irving will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the second and fourth Fridays of each month throughout the school year.
Founded by Heather Newell, a single mom of a first-grade daughter, the all-volunteer group offers help and support for moms and their children of all ages – from infants to high schoolers. Meetings include meals, activities for the kids, and guest speakers addressing topics like parenting, finances, career education and spiritual healing.
“In a nutshell, this is an all volunteer group of single moms helping single moms. We are not professionals and this isn’t a therapy group,” explains Heather. “We provide a safe, positive environment for single moms and their children to eat, laugh, heal and make new friends. We are a networking group, a clearinghouse of information, with access to education and speakers on a number of issues so important to single moms – and all meetings are free of charge.”
Heather added, “When you look at all that has to be done…by you alone…sometimes the most important factor in getting out of bed in the morning is knowing that you have another single mom friend choosing to make that same choice with you that morning!”
