Middle school golfer raises $5,000 in ‘Kids Play FORE Kids’ scramble

(Garland ISD) September 13, 2012 – Only 12 years old, Holden Wisener already has his future figured out. He wants to become a professional golfer, playing on par with Rory McIlroy, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

The Brandenburg Academy sixth grader appears to be well on his way, practicing almost every day after school until the sun goes down. Wisener also competes in several U.S. Kids Golf and Northern Texas PGA Junior Golf Foundation events. He even qualified for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships this past August.

“I’ve gone to the Championships for the past three years,” commented Wisener. “I think it’s really good for my game because I get to see what other players from around the world are doing.”

Known throughout the North Texas junior golf scene, Wisener was recently invited to be on a committee for the second annual “Kids Play FORE Kids” fund-raising event. On Aug. 10, more than 100 junior golfers played a nine-hole scramble after raising approximately $61,000 for the NTPGA Junior Golf Foundation and Make-A-Wish North Texas.

Wisener was named the top fund raiser with a total of $5,205.

“I wrote a lot of letters, texted friends, and had the help of my parents and grandparents,” he explained. “Everyone was very generous. Now I have to start writing thank you letters, and I think my arm is going to fall off.”

Winning a grand prize of airfare, hotel accommodations, and two tickets to the 2012 Ryder Cup on September 28-30, Wisener is excited to see his idols in action. But he says he’s more excited to see how his contributions will benefit others.

“It was never about winning. I was just happy to raise money for a good cause.”

Wisener was introduced to the game at age two by his grandfather and says that he’s loved it ever since.

“I’ve played a bunch of sports, and I love that golf is independent. If you have a bad hole, you can do better on the next one. I also like the perspective that I get from playing the game. I think it translates well into everyday life.”

When asked about his game plan for going pro, Wisener said he intends to keep working hard and wants to attend the University of Texas.
