(Rockwall) October 15, 2012 – The 9th Annual Rockwall Fire Department Open House drew more than 2,500 people to Fire Station #2 that came to meet firefighters, view demonstrations and learn more about fire prevention in celebration of Fire Prevention Week.

Twelve hundred slices of pizza and 500 cupcakes were served for lunch at the free event, which included face-painting, air-brushed tattoos, a balloon artist and interactive inflatables for the kids.

Fire Chief Mark Poindexter said the turnout was “phenomenal” and the community “amazing!”

“We want to thank students in the Rockwall High School PAL (Peer Assistance Leadership) program for helping make the Open House a successful community event by volunteering their time to assist us with many of the day’s activities,” said Chief Poindexter. “We also want to thank our residents that came out to learn more about our department.”

Volunteer firefighters were on hand to provide information about becoming a volunteer and offer tours of the fire station.

“We hope to have taken steps to becoming closer to those we serve and to have inspired some to join us,” Chief Poindexter noted.

Have Two Ways Out! is the theme of Fire Prevention Week. Statistics show one home structure fire was reported every 85 seconds in 2010 resulting in:

  • 13,350 injuries
  • 2,640 deaths
  • $6.9 billion in damage
