(Garland ISD – November 20, 2012) As Garland ISD prepares for Superintendent Curtis Culwell’s retirement in December, the Board of Trustees announced an interim at its Nov. 13 work session in the Harris Hill Administration Building.
Gary Reeves, assistant superintendent of administration, will lead the district until Culwell’s replacement is named.
“Dr. Reeves is a longtime employee and administrator of Garland ISD,” said Board President Linda Griffin. “His tenure here and strong leadership ability make him a perfect choice for interim superintendent. The Board and I are confident that Dr. Reeves will continue to lead the district in the right direction as we finish our superintendent search.”
Reeves joined the district in 1969 after teaching and coaching for four years in Dallas ISD. Beginning his GISD career as a teacher and coach at Garland High School, he later served as an assistant principal at Lakeview Centennial High School, a principal at Kimberlin Academy for Excellence, and a principal at North Garland High School. Reeves was named the district’s Assistant Superintendent of Administration in 1984 and has served in that position since. He holds a doctorate in education from Baptist Christian College and a master’s degree from East Texas State University.
During his 47-year career in education, Reeves has received numerous accolades, including the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) State Administrator of the Year award, the District 10-4A Baseball Coach of the Year award, and inductions into the Kilgore College and Garland Sports Halls of Fame. Reeves is also a past president of the North Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators, the Dallas County Association of School Administrators, the Garland Administrators Association, and the Region 10 chapter of ATPE.
Reeves will assume interim superintendent duties after the first of the new year.
