Center for Nonprofit Management recognizes retailer’s hunger-relief commitment in North Texas
(DALLAS – December 3, 2012) The Center for Nonprofit Management recently named Kroger the Corporation of the Year at the 2012 A Night of Life ceremony in Dallas. The North Texas Food Bank, the leading hunger-relief agency in Dallas serving families in 13 counties, nominated Kroger for the monumental honor.
“We have a longstanding relationship with the North Texas Food Bank,” says Bill Breetz, president of Kroger Southwest. “At Kroger, we have a commitment to fighting hunger in the neighborhoods we serve through financial grants, daily fresh food donations, volunteerism, and through partnerships with organizations that tirelessly work to resolve food insecurity, an issue which is afflicting a growing number of Texas households.”
During the ceremony, a video produced by NTFB illustrated the significance of Kroger’s Perishable Donation Partnership to the food bank’s operation. Since 2009, Kroger has supported NTFB with the donation of fresh beef, poultry and pork products. Since the partnership’s inception, Kroger has added fresh dairy items to the list of donated products. Kroger is also currently piloting a method to donate fruits and vegetables. Through the partnership, Kroger helped NTFB provide more than 1.5 million nutritious meals to area families, seniors and children in 2011.
“Kroger has been an outstanding NTFB partner for over two decades, investing in the fight against hunger through multiple avenues of corporate citizenship and social responsibility,” says Jan Pruitt, president and CEO of the North Texas Food Bank. “It was an honor to nominate such a great organization for this prestigious award, and we look forward to our continued partnership for years to come.”
Earlier this year, Kroger reengineered its product reclamation process in Dallas. Kroger now has a reclamation center located within NTFB—a first of-its-kind in the state. The pilot program uses Kroger’s sophisticated scanning and inventory system thereby enabling NTFB to scan, sort and box products efficiently for distribution to its 300 member agencies across North Texas. The center is projected to add one to two million pounds of non-perishable items, including personal hygiene products, to the food bank’s inventory per year.
Additionally, Kroger aids NTFB throughout the year with fundraisers and food drives such as Bringing Hope to the Table, Souper Bowl of Caring and Stamp Out Hunger.
Kroger was one of three finalists for the Corporation of the Year honor—among the finalists were Jersey Mike’s Subs nominated by Wipe Out Kids Cancer and Pioneer Natural Resources nominated by Dallas Habitat for Humanity.
