Fifth grader recognized for act of bravery during house fire

(ROCKWALL ISD-January 2, 2013) The Rockwall County Fire Department visited Hays Elementary this past October to educate students on fire safety and prevention. Students were educated on the importance of having a fire safety plan, knowing your home address and remaining calm during emergencies.

Jacob Purdue, a fifth grade student from Hays Elementary, demonstrated his fire safety knowledge during a recent fire that took place at his home. After he and his dad discovered their house was on fire, Jacob immediately called 911. He spoke calmly to the operator and provided details of their emergency. Jacob’s quick action prevented the fire from further spreading and saved the surrounding homes from devastation.

Later this month the Rockwall County Commissioner will also recognize Jacob for his act of bravery.
