Winter Games of Texas 2013 coming Jan 18-20

Skill, speed and stamina tested at North Texas’ largest on-going multi-sport event

(FRISCO-January 8, 2013) Touchdowns and chilly days, twists and turns on the ice, last minute winning layups, skill, speed and stamina, and a well placed serve, kick or spike will mark the events of the Winter Games of Texas. If the 2012 Summer Olympics were not enough of a sports fix for you, then be sure to get your fill of the Winter Games of Texas over the MLK Holiday weekend January 18-20, 2013 in Frisco.

This will be the 8th year in a row for the largest on-going multi-sport event held in North Texas featuring athletes of all ages. Close to 4,000 youth and adult athletes, 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees, and volunteers will participate with enthusiasm and passion.

What’s a simple past time for many, the recreational, amateur, and Olympic-hopeful athletes of the Winter Games of Texas are serious about competing. This year the sports lineup has grown to 13 different activities including basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball,  table tennis and the newest addition – the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship.

Figure skating will be held at The Ice at Stonebriar, martial arts at Hunt Middle School, soccer at Warren Sports Complex and swimming at the Frisco ISD Natatorium, and weightlifting at the Frisco Athletic Center – just to name a few. Gymnastics and fencing will happen at locations in Plano and Dallas. Each of the games offers different goals and challenges for each athlete, and the best part for Texans is that none of the sports require snow!

The Winter Games of Texas only happens once a year and was created as a companion to the Summer Games of Texas by the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation, the Frisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Frisco Parks and Recreation Department.

“We are so excited to return once again to Frisco for the 2013 Winter Games of Texas. The reception and service the participants, spectators and TAAF liaisons receive is second to none. Frisco has this event down pat and continues to improve this event every year! The participants will not find a better collection of sports venues anywhere in the State,” says TAAF Executive Director, Mark Lord.

Event Manager, Chaney Muench, says, “The Winter Games of Texas is a well-run event that has led to rising participation over the years. The athletes enjoy the competition and their families can enjoy what the city has to offer in terms of attractions, dining and entertainment. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, and table tennis at the Winter Games of Texas will take their competitive journey to an automatic berth in the 2013 State Games of America, July 31-August 4, 2013.

Registration may still be open in some sports for athletes and volunteers. Visit the website www.taaf.com or call 1-877-GoFrisco (463-7472) for more information.
