Marine Mounted Color Guard comes to Rockwall

Marine Mounted Color Guard comes to Rockwall

(ROCKWALL ISD-February 27, 2013) Comprised of active duty Marines, the Mounted Color Guard ride wild Mustangs of palomino color, adopted from the Bureau of Land Management’s Adopt a Horse and Burro Program. The Color Guard travels across the country performing at rodeos, parades and ceremonies.

This Thursday, February 28, the Marine Mounted Color Guard is scheduled to arrive at the Rockwall Sheriff’s Posse Arena, 972 TL Townsend Drive. During their stay in the area, the public is welcome to view the horses at the Sheriff’s Office.

The Marine Mounted Color Guard will present two separate performances on Friday, March 1. Both performances are closed events FOR STUDENTS ONLY. The first is at Utley Middle School (arrive 11:14 a.m., depart 1:10 p.m.); the second is at Williams Middle School (arrive 11:50 a.m., depart 1:11 p.m.)

Since 1967, this extraordinary military unit has been stationed aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California, representing the United States Marine Corps and the Logistics Base at events and ceremonies throughout the country.

This Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard performs precision color guard movements in numerous types of events. What sets this color guard apart from any other military color guard is the fact that “America’s Heroes” are riding “America’s Living Legends,” wild mustangs captured and adopted from the Bureau of Land Management’s “Adopt a Horse and Burro Program.” In addition, the team only rides Mustangs of Palomino color. The Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard is the only remaining mounted color guard in the Marine Corps today.

Additionally, the riders are trained to recognize that horses are living creatures capable of thinking, feeling, and decision-making, no different than you and I. The Marines learn to respect their mounts as individuals with different personalities. Being aware of each horse’s potential and learning how to bring it out challenges every rider to be a better horseman and stronger leader of Marines.
