Hospital earns accreditation for its diabetes education program, partners with Helping Hands and other organizations to provide services
(ROCKWALL-February 7, 2013) Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Rockwall is pleased to announce that its diabetes education program was recently accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. This program provides residents in and around Rockwall County increased access to critical diabetes education services.
Diabetes education is a collaborative process through which people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior. By participating in a program such as this, individuals are able to self-manage the disease and its related conditions.
“Individuals come to me very scared and overwhelmed by the vast amount of information they are trying to comprehend,” said the hospital’s Certified Diabetes Educator, Karen Collins, RN. “I see my role as that of a consultant. I am here to support that person; helping pull together all the information into a plan that will successfully manage their condition.”
As part of the program, Texas Health Rockwall offers outpatient diabetes classes, performs speaking engagements and participates in health screenings as well as providing traditional inpatient services. Karen has seen how the increase in diabetes affects individuals and families throughout the area. Partnering with other organizations in the area, such as Helping Hands, to provide education services is an important part of the goal to gain control over the negative effects of the disease.
“Trends show that diabetes education is moving out of the hospital and into the community, so AADE’s accreditation program was created, in part, to encourage diabetes education where the patient is seeking care,” said Leslie E. Kolb, RN, BSN, MBA, Program Director, Diabetes Education Accreditation Program. “The program offered by Texas Health Presbyterian Rockwall is exactly the type of program we envisioned when we set up our accreditation program in 2009.”
