Think pink: Boys & Girls Club members are up to the challenge

Stephan Larson – before

(ROCKWALL-February 22, 2013) Have you ever tried to get more than 100 children between elementary and middle school ages to do something together for a common goal?

Stephan Larson – After

The Boys & Girls Club of Rockwall County found a way.  Director of Program Services, Stephan Larson, challenged Club members to turn in 100% of their report cards and in return he would color his hair, mustache, and beard hot pink.

Staff members encouraged members and their parents to turn in the report cards over the course of three weeks, and after one week 85% of the Club members turned in their report cards! Within only 2 ½ weeks, the Club had collected 100% and Stephan lost the challenge — or did he?

The Club uses progress reports and report cards to help members with their school work by offering tutoring in Reading/Language Arts and Mathematics twice a week for grades below 84.  The goal is to see that 100% of Club members advance to the next grade with a “B” average or higher.  Members or their parents can opt to participate in tutoring regardless of their grades.

At the Boys & Girls Club Great futures start here.  It is our vision to provide a world class experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for their future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.
