‘Communities Matter’ at Rowlett Public Library

Celebrate National Library Week April 14-20

(ROWLETT-April 13, 2013) This week, the Rowlett Public Library joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their customers live and work study and play.  Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community.

Librarians work with elected officials, small business owners, students and the public at large to discover what their communities needs are and strive meet them.  Offering e-books and technology classes, materials and instruction for GED students and English-language learners, resources for job seekers and support for early literacy, librarians listen to the communities they serve, and they respond.

“Service to the community has always been the focus of the Rowlett Public Library,” said Kathy Freiheit, Director of Library Services.  “While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and work in different ways in providing for the needs of every member of this community.”

In celebration of National Library Week, Rowlett Public Library will offer special displays of library materials, showing community residents that our “Community Matters!”  Services showcases will highlight the many services that the library offers Rowlett citizens, and visitors will be encouraged to sign up for several prize basket drawings which will be awarded at the close of the week.  Library staff will be on hand to answer questions and invite customers to come back to the library and enjoy programs designed for people of all ages.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.
