Luncheon honors Meals on Wheels Senior Services volunteers

(ROCKWALL-April 19, 2013) A luncheon honoring volunteer drivers who deliver meals to homebound seniors and disabled clients of Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County was held on Friday, April 12. There were 67 honorees in attendance at the luncheon, which was provided by and held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Heath. Members of the LDS church substituted in delivering meals Friday to enable all of the volunteer drivers the opportunity to attend and to be recognized.

In addition,  Rockwall Mayor David Sweet, Mayor Pro Tem David White,  Rockwall Fire Marshal Ariana Hargrove and Heath City Manager Ed Thatcher were in attendance to honor the volunteers. Mayor Sweet and Thatcher offered words of appreciation and gratitude for the service and difference these volunteers make in the lives of seniors in Rockwall County.

On any week day there is an average of 14 volunteer drivers who have committed to  giving of their time and driving their own vehicles at their own expense to deliver meals to over 165 seniors. Due to the service and efforts of these individuals, homebound seniors who are at nutritional risk are able to receive a healthy meal and have friendly human contact on a daily basis, enabling them to live independently in their own homes as long as safely possible.
