(ROCKWALL-May 20, 2013) The Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony May 19 to celebrate the grand opening of The Cedars Disc Golf Course, a community service project of the Leadership Rockwall Class of 2013.
The 18-hole disc golf course is located at Smith Family Park in Fate, across from Miss May Vernon Elementary School. The mostly flat, heavily wooded course is cut out of Mountain Cedars, or Junipers. The design will challenge even the most experienced players, while providing plenty of opportunity for beginners to have fun. Bring your own discs; there is no cost to play!
The Leadership Rockwall program is an arm of the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce. Its mission is to grow effective community leaders by teaching candidates how to lead through effective communication, personal advocacy and interaction. Class members meet at least once a month for a full year, learning the civic process; exploring the history of Rockwall, Fate and Royse City; touring the jails and county courthouse; attending Legislative Days in Austin; and completing a community service project.
The recommendation for this year’s disc golf project was made by Fate Public Works Director Bobby Clay. A list of proposed projects was presented by each class member and narrowed down after considering costs, availability of resources and the legacy the project will leave behind. Leadership Rockwall members raised more than $14,000 for the disc golf course, which is now part of the Fate Parks and Recreation Department.
In partnership with the City of Fate, and The Life House in Rockwall who drew out the course, the community can now enjoy disc golf at Smith Family Park, 100 Miss May Drive.
Members of this year’s class are Stephen Geiger, Farmers Electric Co-op; Nathan Taylor, GMR Protection Resources, Inc.; Bobby Clay, City of Fate; Josh Sparks, American National Bank; Deuce Waters, City of Rockwall; Christopher Shaw, BB&T; Aaron Dobson, City of Rockwall; Chris Henry, Lake Pointe Medical Center; George Warner, American National Bank; Deanna Kuykendall, State Representative Scott Turner’s office; Misti Potter, Boys & Girls Club of Rockwall County; Lauren Kennedy, Hilton Dallas/Rockwall Lakefront; Dana Macalik, Rockwall Chamber; Jennifer Spencer, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital; Ashlei Neill, RISD Education Foundation; Lesa Walker, Rockwall County Helping Hands; Shannon Estrada, Law office of Shannon Estrada; and Julia Bryant, Royse City Chamber of Commerce.
