Volunteers unite to help veterans, elderly on National Rebuilding Day

(DALLAS-May 2, 2013) RebuildingDallas.org, the nation’s largest volunteer home repair organization, celebrated National Rebuilding Day on April 27 in a big way.

Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas and volunteers from the Dallas community came together to revitalize ten homes, a church and the Westmoreland Heights Community Center for low-income families in West Dallas.

The annual event was a huge success and gained supporters from Senator John Cornyn’s office, as well as Dallas Councilwoman Monica Alonso of District 6, who came out to show their support for the West Dallas community.

Services included roofing repairs, landscaping, painting, grab-bar installations, ramp building, a neighborhood cleanup and home modifications.

The recipients of National Rebuilding Day, who included low-income families, veterans and the elderly, received these repairs at no cost. The Westmoreland Community Center was also repaired and received a much needed face-lift. This center hosts senior-related activities, youth events and a weekly food drive for the West Dallas residents.

Sponsors included BBVA Compass, Bank of America, CDM Smith, Davis General Contractors, Hewlett-Packard, HNTB Corporation, The Home Depot Foundation, Jim’s Climate Control, National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), PCV|VRM Seeds of Hope, Performance Drywall Services, Sears Heroes at Home, Tom Thumb and Wells Fargo.

Volunteer groups included Entrepreneurs of North Texas, Gonzaga University Alumni, Med Travelers, Texas Woman’s University Family Services, Texas Woman’s University Occupational Therapy and Southern Methodist University Alpha Phi Omega.

Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas partnering organizations included Dallas Leadership Foundation, Builders of Hope and People Helping People.
