Rockwall-Heath Coach Moss & son share their story

Why the Y?

(Rockwall) June 27, 2013 – Editor’s Note: For more than 30 years, the JER Chilton YMCA at Rockwall has been helping to shape the lives of many in the local community. With a mission to “put Christian values into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all,” the Y focuses on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility – providing opportunities to give back and support our neighbors. Our “Why the Y” series shines the spotlight on community members who have been positively affected by being part of the Y family.

As Head Football Coach and Athletics Coordinator for Rockwall-Heath High School, Mickey Moss understands what it takes to bring out the best in his players.

Moss has spent the past 27 years coaching – 19 of those as a head coach. He holds a B.S. in Pre-Med from Southern Arkansas University and a M.Ed. in Athletic Administration from theUniversityofTexasatAustin. While at SAU, he was a four-year letterman on the football team as a linebacker.

Coach Moss is also a husband and father of five who devotes his life to Jesus Christ. When it came time to enroll his son Caleb in a football program, he explored the options available locally – and decided on the YMCA. Caleb was in sixth grade at the time.

“The Y really taught our son the basics of playing football,” Coach Moss said. “The Y also showed us that coaches and kids are accountable for what is said and done on the field. The experience was more about the relationships that were made – the character of the coaches and the teammates Caleb played with.”

That year, Caleb’s team was the best in the league. “Just for the record,” Coach Moss added, “we were undefeated.”

Caleb is now a starting tight end, entering his senior year in high school.

“The Y really started my love of football,” Caleb said. “I don’t remember all the wins and losses, but I do remember the kids I played with and the coaches that coached me.”

Caleb echoed his father’s sentiments, pointing out that the Y was really about “building relationships.” He said it was the most fun he’s had playing in his football career, and recalled being coached by Brad Peters and Joe Wimpy, and playing with teammates Justin Peters and Reese Wilson. The memories run deep for Caleb, especially when Dillon Lewis “destroyed him on the line.”
