Rockwall-Heath grad helps lead West Texas A&M equestrian team to national victory

Katie Callaghan shares the spotlight with her parents, Colleen and Dan, and brother Brian.

June 21, 2013 –Katie Callaghan, a junior at West Texas A&M in Canyon and a member of the WTAMU Equestrian Team, competed in the May 2013 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Finals Competition in Harrisburg, PA.

With 400+ teams and more than 8,900 riders, the IHSA is the oldest and largest annual collegiate riding championships in America. Callaghan, a 2011 Rockwall-Heath High School graduate and a Rockwall County 4-H Gold Star alumni, represented her school in the Western Horsemanship Intermediate Division.

Callaghan placed first in the Semi-Finals held in Pomona, CA in March to qualify for the national event. She then placed 5th out of 9 in competition during the National Finals which helped secure victory for the team. The 2013 IHSA National Team Championship was awarded to the WTAMU Equestrian Team.
