Rockwall Technology Park Success Story: Special Products & Manufacturing

(Rockwall) June 5, 2013 – The city of Rockwall and the Rockwall Economic Development Corporation are proud of its 365-acre Rockwall Technology Park, located south of Interstate 30. The Technology Park is home to 13 businesses, including the Rockwall Economic Development Corporation office and Texas A&M University-Commerce at Rockwall.

Special Products & Mfg. (SPM) was one of the first businesses in the Rockwall Technology Park. They occupy and operate a 140,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility. SPM is a contract manufacturer specializing in electro-mechanical assembly, precision metal fabrication, machining, welding and powder coating.

From their humble beginnings as a “garage shop,” SPM grew and eventually chose their current home in the Rockwall Technology Park. Robert “Bob” Grand-Lienard Jr. retired in 1987 and turned the business over to his sons, Rob and Ed Grand-Lienard.

SPM has been able to source the vast majority of its workforce from Rockwall and its neighboring cities. The Grand-Lienards have been impressed with the abundant and skilled workforce that Rockwall offers.

“We are placing an emphasis on educating Rockwall that we’re here in the Technology Park, and we’re a great manufacturing company that has jobs available,” said Rob Grand-Lienard, SPM chief executive officer. “We hope to continue to recruit the kind of talent we have been able to source from Rockwall and the surrounding area.”

The Grand-Lienards chose Rockwall as home for SPM primarily due to the stature and appeal of the Rockwall Technology Park.

“We wanted to raise the perception from our customers as to who we are, and building our facility in Rockwall accomplished that,” Rob Grand-Lienard said.

Both Rob and Ed Grand-Lienard live and raise their families in Rockwall. They have chosen to stay in Rockwall primarily because of Rockwall’s small-town feel, quality of life and the education system.

“Rockwall is a self-contained city,” Rob Grand-Lienard said. “We live, work and play here. We have all the dining and shopping options we want. There is no reason to leave town. We have all-access living, and we love it.”

The Rockwall Economic Development Corporation recruits businesses the caliber of SPM to the Technology Park at an impressive rate. The latest additions, Bimbo Bakeries, A&M-Commerce at Rockwall, Hatfield and Co. and Nolan Power continue to add value to the city of Rockwall tax base, reducing the tax burden on the residents of Rockwall.
But it’s not all about the money.

Recruiting businesses that care about their communities, like SPM, adds value in other ways. These businesses provide jobs to our residents, become great neighbors to our families and help elevate Rockwall’s reputation as the premier address for business and quality of life in the North Texas region.
