Algal bloom may affect taste, odor of water in Rockwall

(Rockwall) July 17, 2013 – If you experience a change in taste or odor of water supplied by the City of Rockwall, a seasonal “algal bloom” is the culprit. It doesn’t change the quality of the water supply – it is strictly a taste issue, according to the city’s water supplier, the North Texas Municipal Water District.

The NTMWD treats the odor changes related to the algal bloom with the addition of potassium permanganate, an oxidizing agent, to the water. To reduce the unpleasant taste, activated carbon is used as an absorption agent. These chemicals are removed during the treatment process prior to delivery of the water supply.  Chlorine, which is used as the disinfectant in the treatment phase, also aids in odor reduction.

City of Rockwal lwater is still safe for use, and it meets all Safe Drinking Water Standards. There are no health hazards resulting from the algal bloom.  For more information, please call 972-771-7730.
