Extreme makeover signals new season at Williams Stadium

(Garland ISD) July 17, 2013 – Drive by Williams Stadium and you will see an extreme makeover in progress.

Last March, the Board of Trustees voted to renovate Garland ISD’s flagship athletic venue. Updates include turf replacement, video board installation and resurfacing the track.

The district’s first-ever video board will give fans a more close-up view and allow players to see themselves on the “big screen” during instant replays. An additional lane is also being added to the track during renovations. This means that Williams can now host regional or area competitions, providing a home-field advantage to the many qualifiers GISD has every year.

“We are excited about the opportunities these updates will bring,” said Cliff Odenwald, assistant athletic director. “We hope they will not only help our students, but also attract new fans and bring attention to the district’s long-standing success in sports.”

Williams’ makeover kicked-off at the end of April and will be completed in time for football practice and non-district games this August. An estimated cost of $2.5 million, renovations are being paid for with remaining bond funds from 2003, as well as money in the district’s general fund. Garland ISD hopes to recoup some of that cost through advertisements on the video board.
