(Rockwall) July 5, 2013 – Rockwall Quest Academy Teacher of the Year, Brian Rushing, worked in partnership with BB&T bank to create a community garden at Helping Hands. Quest students and community volunteers will tend the garden and all produce generated will be donated to the Helping Hands food pantry.
The inaugural planting day, held April 19th, was a great community event. To help make this project possible BB&T provided a generous grant and supplied 10 volunteers to help with planting. Community ISD SPED teacher, Mrs. Helge, and her class also joined Quest students on planting day. Mrs.Helge and her husband Nick provided their tractor to help till the garden.
Mr. Rushing has encouraged the entire teaching team at Quest to implement the Helping Hands garden into their curriculum. Throughout this experience Mr. Rushing will be collecting data to determine the effect that student involvement in the garden has on attendance, behavior, GPA, quality of work, productivity and self esteem. This is a great opportunity for students to become more connected in the community.
