Why the Y? Larry Parks of Rockwall shares his story

Editor’s Note: For more than 30 years, the JER Chilton YMCA at Rockwall has been helping to shape the lives of many in the local community. With a mission to “put Christian values into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all,” the Y focuses on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility – providing opportunities to give back and support our neighbors. Our “Why the Y” series shines the spotlight on community members who have been positively affected by being part of the Y family.

Larry Parks, Senior VP of American National Bank Rockwall, has served on the YMCA Board for more than 25 years – a strong testament to his belief in the organization and the positive impact that Y programs have on the local community.

“My hometown did not have a YMCA,” Larry recalls, “but the spirit of encouragement of community always impacted my thought process. My dad lived in the downtown YMCA facility inOklahoma Citywhile working and completing his business degree. He appreciated the ‘assistance’ of moderate housing when it was needed in his life. He went on to build a successful banking career of 55 years in the Texas Panhandle.”

Larry’s Y connection has allowed him to meet a lot of interesting, civic-minded people who share a common goal – to touch as many lives as possible through quality YMCA programs.

“My favorite part has been working shoulder-to-shoulder with many good people to secure commitments for the YMCA Annual Campaign. This allows families and individuals in our community – young and old alike – to participate in Y programs, regardless of their ability to pay,” he said. “The testimony of those impacted by this assistance always refills the cup of sharing good fortune with others.”

Larry added that the Y offers local youth options that lead to positive, healthy choices. “The community benefits as we spend less time and resources on social rehabilitation,” he said.

The JER Chilton YMCA is currently renovating and expanding its facility on North Highway 205.

“Not only has Mr. Chilton made a major pledge, but many other individuals and companies in Rockwall and theEast Dallasregion have as well. Thanks to this support, our members will enjoy a nicer, more user-friendly facility. The 12,000 square foot expansion will be state-of-the art,” Larry said. The Y aims to further develop programs in Heath, as well as the southern and eastern parts of Rockwall County.

Larry and his wife, Sheri Starkey, live in the Flagstone Creek subdivision. Their daughter Paige is a court coordinator for Judge Brian Williams, and their son Murphy is a civil engineer inFort Worth. Larry’s stepson, Matt Harris, is a Texas Tech graduate. Larry also enjoys spending time with his two grandchildren.
