From the Jingle Bell Run for Blane website:

Blane Thompson was a bright-eyed 11 year old boy who loved animals, reading, the outdoors, and his dog, Ruffles.  His heart was so full of  compassion that he often talked about a “funny feeling” he would get in  his stomach when someone was hurt or treated unfairly.  It was not uncommon for Blane to bring home the stray dog or cat, to ask for money to give to the beggar on the street, or to help elderly ladies unload their groceries.

In March of 2003, Blane was in a snow skiing accident while on vacation with his family.  After nine days of unsuccessful treatments, Blane had left this world.  Because of the sweet and giving spirit he showed during his lifetime, Blane’s family chose to donate his organs.  Through this– a 6 month old baby boy named Joseph, a 12 year old girl named America, and a 55 year old man were given the gift of life.

Run for Blane was created by friends and family who wanted to honor his memory. Not only does it bear his name but it also carries on his passion of helping others.  His dream was to one day become a veterinarian and spend his time helping animals.  It is the goal of Run for Blane to raise funds through the annual Blane’s Run and other events to give scholarships to local graduates pursuing the same dreams.
