Volunteer tutors can help change the world…one word at at time
ROCKWALL (December 19, 2013) The Rockwall County Library Reading for Adults (RFA) Literacy Program offers FREE educational classes including:
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
- GED Studies and Preparation
- U.S. Citizenship Preparation
- Adult Literacy Studies
With an enrollment of 300 students, RFA has convenient class schedules, including weekday mornings and select evening classes. RFA tutors are local volunteers (experience is not a requirement – they provide free training) and there is no fee for the program classes. There is a small fee for the books.

ESL (English as a Second Language), GED, Citizenship and Adult Literacy classes resume on January 6th, 2014.
In 2013, the Rockwall County Library’s Reading for Adults program held 1,538 class meetings and impacted the lives of 655 students, thanks to efforts of 79 volunteers donating 7,833 3/4 hours of service.
Volunteers were recognized at a tutor appreciation event at the library. Guests were treated to dinner while being entertained by Chris Ghormley, Lauren Atkins and Karen Frazier, a musical trio that performs regularly at First United Methodist Church Rockwall.
In 2013, RFA volunteers helped three students acquireU.S.citizenship. Thirty-seven students were able to obtain their GED, four were accepted to college and 150 advanced a level in their ESL class.
Certificates were awarded to volunteer tutors by Carol Cease, Literacy Program Coordinator, and Marcine McCulley, Library Director. Also in attendance were Sharon Bowman, RFA Advisory Board member, RFA Data Records and ESL tutor; Jamie Rubush, RFA Advisory Board member and ESL tutor; Becky Cecil, Corresponding Secretary, Friends of the Rockwall County Library; and Jane Buie, VP of Membership.
