ROCKWALL (February 28, 2014)The City of Rockwall hosted the 14th Annual Texas Youth Advisory Commission Summit on February 22-23, 2014 at the Hilton Dallas/Rockwall Lakefront.

YAC programs are championed by the Texas Municipal League and provide cities with energetic volunteers for civic projects, give city leaders fresh perspectives on issues challenging cities, and create a sense of accomplishment for youth. The event had 302 participants from 29 cities in Texas, including 15 students from Rockwall.

The theme for the two day event was “Building Strong Leaders” and featured comedian Michael Jr., nationally recognized teen expert and motivational speaker Josh Shipp, retired coach and author, David Vince as well as several inspirational, local speakers. Rockwall County’s Texas State Representative Scott Turner also spoke at the Summit.

The 2014 charitable giving project focused on improving the lives of children and their families living with cystic fibrosis. YAC groups were asked to bring gift cards to donate to The Blue Caboose Children’s Fund, which provides gift cards for meals or personal items at local restaurants or stores. Donations will go to families whose children are being treated at the Cystic Fibrosis Care Center at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. The 2014 YAC groups presented more than $1,400 in gift card donations to Mrs. Kelly Colbert of The Blue Caboose.

The City of Killeen will serve as host of the 2015 YAC Summit, which is scheduled to be held January 31 – February 1, 2015. For more information about the City of Rockwall’s YAC program, contact City Secretary, Kristy Ashberry, at (972) 772-6406.
