(February 17, 2014) Rockwall County voters had a chance to pose questions and hear from candidates February 13th during the Candidates’ Forum hosted by the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce and the Royse City Chamber of Commerce.

The Chambers’ inaugural forum featured candidates in contested races for offices in Rockwall County, registered in the March 4th Primary Election. Candidates took the stage at the Rockwall High School Theater to share where they stood on important issues affecting the community. They responded to audience questions on topics ranging from roads, water, sales taxes, sustainable developments and more. The Rockwall Chamber moderated the event.

Candidates included David Sweet – County Judge; Lee Gilbert – County Commissioner, Pct. 2; Randy Puckett – County Commissioner, Pct. 2; David Magness – County Commissioner, Pct. 4; and Brooks Williams – County Commissioner, Pct. 4.  Bill Bell – County Judge was also invited to participate, but was unable to attend.

“We hope that our County Forum was something that our community appreciates and we were pleased to be able to bring it to concerned voters. Events such as what we had last week serve to support the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Affairs Committee’s goals and objectives,” said Dana Macalik, Chamber president. “The Legislative Affairs Committee’s agenda is to articulate the issues that have been identified as particularly important by our Chamber membership. This Committee represents the interests of the area business community before local, state and federal government and is focused to advocate for business-friendly public policies and the concerns of the business community.”

The Legislative Affairs Committee serves as a research and advisory committee for the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and partnership at large. Its primary purpose is to monitor governmental matters that could impact the community or local business, present recommendations to the Chamber’s Board of Directors, and to assist in the initiation of the appropriate action.

The committee will also create and recommend the Chamber’s state and federal legislative agendas. The committee prepares a Legislative Priority package that stakes out the Chamber’s positions on issues – ranging from transportation to water to healthcare – that come before the Texas Legislative branches and nationally in Washington.

Please contact the Chamber offices with any questions or comments.

Early voting for the March 4th Primary Election is underway through February 28th.
