ROCKWALL, TX (March 31, 2014) The Friday Study Club met March 21, 2014 at the Bimbo Bakeries USA for a tour of their Rockwall facility which opened in January 2013.

Wayne Sager, Plant Manager, and Jerry McManus, Human Relations Manager, welcomed the group and gave them a brief history of Bimbo Bakeries USA.  Their story begins in 1994 when Grupo Bimbo, Mexico’s largest baking company with operations in 19 countries, purchased a California-based tortilla company.  In 1997 they entered the U.S. bread market with the acquisition of Pacific Pride Bakeries of San Diego.  Several other bakery acquisitions, such as Mrs. Bairds, George Weston Ltd, and Sara Lee, were made, doubling BBU’s size and making them the largest bakery in the United States.

The Rockwall plant specializes in baking breads and buns.  Their state-of-the-art equipment enables them to bake 345 loaves of bread per minute.  They continue making the brands of the bakeries they acquired, such as Mrs. Bairds, Oroweat, Entenmann’s sweet baked goods, Thomas’ English muffins and bagels, Boboli pizza breads, Arnold, Brownberry, Freihofer’s and Stroehmann, along with their own Bimbo brand.

The Friday Study Club was given the opportunity to view, through large glass windows, the actual process of making the bread as McManus explained each step of the employees as well as the massive machinery, which allows the accomplishment of Bimbo Bakeries USA’s goal of baking perfect, fresh loaves of bread for our enjoyment.

After the tour, the club’s president, June Frawley, conducted a short business meeting.  Peg Pannell Smith announced that the club’s Spring Luncheon will be Friday, April 11th at The Fatted Calf on Rockwall’s Historic Downtown Square.  Reservations and payments should be made to Carolyn Duckworth by April 7th.

Co-hostesses Nancy Hill and Betty Moon are applauded for making the arrangements for our very interesting tour and for providing the refreshments.
