ROCKWALL (March 4, 2014) A full house is expected when Steel Magnolias opens at 8 p.m. Friday, March 21 on the Rockwall Community Playhouse stage. This is the third time for Darlene Singleton to direct this popular and beloved show written by Robert Harling.
Additional performances will be March 22, 23, 28, 29, 30; April 4, 5 and 6. Show times are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Steel Magnolias is set in Truvy’s beauty salon where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Come spend time with Annelle, Truvy, Ouiser, Miss Clairee, M’Lynn, and Shelby. Their friendships draw on underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.
The first Sunday matinee, on March 23, will pay tribute to Rockwall’s ‘Real Magnolias’ – Mattie Mays, Jane Bounds, Sammie Vaught, Mary Ellen Hall. These women, who have since passed away, served as inspiration for director Darlene Singleton, who grew up listening to these ladies talk, laugh and share life lessons in the local hair salon owned by her girlfriend’s mother.
“What I didn’t learn from my own mother and my grandmothers, I learned from those women in that beauty shop,” Singleton said.
The 2014 cast includes Stacey Kluttz as Truvy; Stephanie Cearley as Annelle; Terry McBay as Clairee; Abby Sue Mckinney (granddaughter of Mattie Mays) as Shelby; Kathy Fisher as M’Lynn; and Deb Caperton Ballard as Ouiser. Assistant Director is Steve Griffin. Gary Freedman is the Producer.
Steel Magnolias runs for three weekends, March 21-April 6 at RCP, 609 E. Rusk St. For tickets and more information, visit rockwallcommunityplayhouse.org.
