ROCKWALL, TX (April 9, 2014) Rockwall High School recently hosted the Corporal Fox 3v3 Basketball Tournament, benefiting Homes for Our Troops. The event raised more than $2,000, which will help fund construction of a home being built in McLendon-Chisholm for severely wounded veteran Marine Corporal Michael Fox.

After attending a groundbreaking ceremony for the home, Rockwall junior Wyatt Miller was inspired to help the cause. He immediately made plans to raise money for Homes for Our Troops and have a blast playing basketball at the same time. Rockwall friends and the RHS athletic community quickly jumped on board to ensure success.

The Rockwall Rotary team and their basketball recruits: Billy Quinton, Frank Conselman, Bart Miller, Pullen teacher Kellie Simon, Rockwall graduate Shelby Adamson and RHS Coach Brent Young and his son Landry.

The morning began with 85 players comprising 17 teams. The event kicked off with introductions by Dale Downum, RHS’ Voice of the Jackets. Dale introduced Cpl. Fox, his girlfriend Erica and Congressman Ralph Hall. The importance of service to our country was clear; players responded with cheers and respect.

Perhaps the highlight of the tournament was not the constant laughter and smiles (mixed with highly competitive athletes), but rather the camaraderie shown throughout the day. Students jumped in and helped out with jobs during the tournament. Players and their families visited with Cpl. Fox, learning about his life and challenges. Dale said it best: “I feel good about the future of our world when I look around at the young people in this gym. The future is great!”

Homes for Our Troops is a national, nonprofit organization committed to helping those who have selflessly given to our country and returned home with serious injuries since September 11, 2001. HFOT assists severely injured veterans and their families by raising money, building materials and professional labor, and by coordinating the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently. The homes are given at no cost to veterans.

Team Legendz: John Redman, Reid Rakow, Ryan Neely, Campbell Kutac and Griffin Neely.

Cpl. Fox was on his third deployment when he suffered the traumatic amputations of both of his legs in an IED blast inMusa Qala,Afghanistanin 2011. His home is targeted for completion this September. The RHS athletic community is excited to have Cpl. Fox as a new friend, neighbor and fan.
