Thai dance troupe to perform Sunday at FCC Rockwall

ROCKWALL (April 2, 2014) A taste of Thailand is coming to Rockwall.  On Sunday, April 6, 2014, at 7pm,  First Christian Church will host a dance/drama troupe from Payap University in Chiang Mai,Thailand.

The performance is free to the public; however, there will be an opportunity to donate toward the cost of transportation for the artists.

The nursery will be open for children through age four.

First Christian Church is located at 3375 Ridge Road, 1.4 mile south of I-30.  For more information, call the church office at 972-771-5526.

The troupe is currently on a performance tour covering several states, including Texas.  The dancers and actors are professional staff members of the Christian Communications Institute, the evangelistic arm of the university.  Chiang Mai is a cultural and educational center in the northern region of Thailand.

During their current tour the CCI troupe is featuring several dances from the four regions of Thailand. The program is concluded with a traditional Thai melodrama based on the parable of the Good Samaritan. Rev. Robert Collins and his wife, Dr. Esther Wakeman, former directors of CCI, are leading the team on this tour. Collins affirms the quality of this program, saying, “Wherever we go, folks from the audience almost always tell us, ‘If we’d known how good this was, we would have promoted it much more.’”

The Institute was established almost forty years ago for the purpose of teaching Christian truth through the use of Thai cultural expressions.  During the school year these artists lead week-long renewal programs for elementary and secondary students. They teach ethical and spiritual values by using music, dance, and drama.  During the winter months the troupe performs traditional melodramas in rural villages on outdoor stages. Although the Institute’s principal ministry is in Thailand, its performers have presented their art in more than a dozen countries on four continents.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), has been active in Thailand for many decades.  Allan and Joan Eubank, Disciples Missionaries to Thailand, were featured presenters at First Christian Church Rockwall for their World Communion festival in 2012.

The Church of Christian Thailand traces its history to the arrival of the first Protestant missionaries in 1828. The church became autonomous in 1934 while uniting with those organized by Presbyterians, British Disciples of Christ, and Baptists. Today, the church includes 350 congregations and more than 100 other worshiping groups, with membership of around 50,000. A priority of the Church of Christian Thailand is evangelism and Christian education.
