ROCKWALL, TX (May 19, 2014) Pullen Elementary fifth graders are busy writing letters and collecting items for care packages for U.S. troops in conjunction with Airborne Angel Cadets, an Irving-based nonprofit organization. Students in other grade levels, as well as members of the community, are encouraged to help by donating care package items.
“We finished reading a historical fiction novel based during the American Revolutionary War. The family in the story has to stop their everyday life to contribute to General Washington and his troops in Valley Forge. The town is furnishing them food, shelter, and clothing during their wintering in Valley Forge,” explained Darcy Newman, Reading Teacher. “After discussing several related leadership projects we could do, we decided on care packages for our troops. We researched different nonprofit organizations around our area and learned about Airborne Angel Cadets.”
The fifth graders received a list of needs food and non-food products from Airborne Angel Cadets, and the students set goals for each of them.
“We will continue collecting items until the end of the school year,” Newman said. “So far, just by collecting from our fifth grade students, we have over 200 items!”
Among the most needed non-food items are razors, body wash/bar soap, shampoo, skin lotion, lip balm, eye drops, deodorant, plain white socks, twin sheet sets and pillow cases. Food items needed include powdered drink mixes, Pringles/Lays Stax Chips, nuts, sunflower seeds, coffee, crackers, energy bars, cookies, beef jerky and foiled tuna packs.
Items may be dropped off at the school or email darcy.newman@rockwallisd.org.
“We would like to invite the community out Tuesday, May 20 to the RISD Memorial Day Ceremony. It will start at 7 p.m. at the Rockwall Performing Arts Center at Ultey. Mrs. Woodard’s Writers For Fighters group will have a table set up for the community to write letters to US soldiers. All the letters written will be delivered with the donations that Pullen 5th graders have collected,” Newman said.
