ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX (May 5, 2014) Boys & Girls Club of Rockwall County recently received two Program Excellence Awards from the North Texas Area Council of Boys & Girls Clubs of America at the Texas Area Council and Youth of the Year Conference in Austin. The Club received Honor Awards for Program Excellence in The Arts and for Innovation & Safety.

In the area of The Arts, the Club began offering performing arts and choir as a result of the construction of the Robert F. Deuell, M.D. Center for the Performing Arts and Science wing at the Rockwall Club. Youth are learning how to record CDs, mix and edit music, and more. The Choir cut their first CD prior to the Christmas Holiday and sold them at the Angels Among Us Breakfast in December. In addition, the Club received a Sony Digital Arts grant allowing kids to learn about photography, and how to manipulate and edit photos. A local Digital Arts competition was held with Celeste Barrera, a 3rd grader from Dobbs Elementary winning and her photo moved on to the Regional Competition.

“Exposing you to opportunities in the area of The Arts is critical to their overall development as productive adults. The Arts teaches youth how to express themselves through multiple mediums, from vocal performances, theatre, and the creation of literary and visual projects,” explained Stephan Larson, BGC Director of Program Services.

In the area of Innovation and Safety, the Club received top honors for its safety policies including mandatory background checks for all volunteers over the age of 18, Crisis Management plans and staff training, as well as access and tracking requirements of all youth. “Child safety is absolutely the most important aspect of the Boys & Girls Club’s daily operations. From the point of entry to the time a parent checks a child out at the front desk; it is our responsibility to insure the kids are safe, engaged and accounted for,” stated Misti Potter, BGC President.
