ROCKWALL, TX (June 23, 2014) Rockwall County’s population grows every year, and it’s no surprise to those who live here. Quality of living is high and the community is thriving. An important part of that growth, however, includes a growing population of elderly citizens. Within the roughly 10 percent of our population that are over 65, is a smaller group of individuals who depend on the community around them. Meals on Wheels Senior Services (MOWSS) of Rockwall County exists for these citizens.
The mission of MOWSS is to keep the elderly and disabled living in their homes as long as safely possible through nutritious meals, daily human contact, and supportive services. Over 30 years ago, this organization began as a grassroots movement here in Rockwall. Today, 66% of their current budget is dependent upon inconsistent and declining government funding. This is a number that can and should be going down as Rockwall County thrives. Many local businesses are stepping up and playing a key role in the success of MOWSS.
As revenue fluctuates each month, two things remain constant: the number of seniors requesting meals increases, and food prices rise. Currently, MOWSS delivers 45,000 meals every year to over 165 seniors. In addition, they provide benefit counseling, senior service referrals, and advocacy ombudsman services in an effort to prevent premature institutionalization of our local seniors. This organization is just one of many that contribute to making Rockwall County the kind of place people are drawn to live, work and then retire.
Texas Health Presbyterian Rockwall has stepped in to do their part in Rockwall County by partnering with MOWSS. Since September of 2013, they have generously given $1,500 each month to MOWSS. This contribution feeds approximately 12 seniors every month and has added stability to the organization’s revenue stream. Institutional partnerships of all levels with local businesses are critical to MOWSS’ ability to forecast for future seniors and reduce dependency on government funding.
Joanna Hailey, Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Compliance at Texas Health Presbyterian, volunteers with MOWSS. She says her organization is “pleased to support Meals on Wheels, a wonderful organization that provides services to improve the health of the communities we serve. Caring for our community is all encompassing whether it’s providing high quality healthcare, contributing to charitable organizations or serving in volunteer roles. We appreciate Meals on Wheels for everything they do.”
When money is invested in an organization like MOWSS, everyone in the community benefits. For every dollar invested in MOWSS, it is estimated that up to $50 is saved in Medicaid spending. When seniors stay in their homes, everyone saves tax dollars by avoiding unnecessary hospital, health care, and nursing home costs.
Local businesses like Texas Health Presbyterian Rockwall are contributing to the well being of the entire community by partnering with MOWSS to help ensure that all seniors and disabled in Rockwall County can live a nourished life with independence and dignity.
