ROCKWALL, TX (June 25, 2014) This Thursday marks the season opener for Rockwall Summer Musicals, as the theater company presents Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific,” directed by Barbara Doudt.
Based on James A. Michener’s bestseller, “Tales of the South Pacific,” the classic musical features a cast of talented local actors, including Ashley Renee Watkins – whom you may recognize from her soprano operatic duo ACTE II, featured on the current season of America’s Got Talent.
Ashley, who plays Bloody Mary in “South Pacific,” made her musical theater debut as Lady Thiang in RSM’s “The King and I.” She recently took second place in the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. National Vocal Arts Competition, and was a finalist in the Meistersinger Vocal Competition at the prestigious AIMS Festival inAustria. She appeared at Carnegie Hall with opera legend, Marilyn Horne.
Several of the musical’s songs, including “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “There Is Nothing Like A Dame,” “Happy Talk,” “Younger than Springtime” and “I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy,” have become popular standards.
“South Pacific” performances are June 26-29 at the Rockwall High School Performing Arts Center at Utley, 1201 TL Townsend. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday & Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Next up for RSM is “Anything Goes,” the beloved Cole Porter musical, with performances on August 14-17.
Tickets for both shows are available at rockwallsummermusicals.org.
As in year’s past, Rockwall Summer Musicals will also present its Eat, Sleep, Play chance drawing. Prizes worth more than $6,000 will be featured – including a Tempur-Pedic mattress set, a weekend stay at the Hilton, dinner at Zanatas, a Kindle Fire and four best-in-house tickets to RSM shows. Raffle tickets are available by emailing thescoop@rockwallsummermusicals.org or by purchasing directly from RSM board members, guild members or cast members. The drawing will be held during intermission of the final performance of “Anything Goes” on August 17. Winners need not be present to win.
