Rededication of Homer B. Johnson Stadium at 7 p.m. tonight
GARLAND ISD, TX (August 29, 2014) Sixty-seven years ago Homer Johnson began his career in Garland ISD. Today, the district’s stadium named in his honor will be rededicated following summer renovations. To celebrate, Johnson will conduct the coin toss before the South Garland Colonels take on Richardson Berkner High School. A video about Johnson and the stadium’s renovations will also be shown. Renovations included turf replacement, structural improvements, press box construction and concession renovations.
Homer Johnson has served as GISD’s Athletics Director since 1963. In 1978, the Garland Memorial Stadium was renamed in his honor. A member of the Texas High School Football and Garland Sports Halls of Fame, Johnson was the National Football Foundation Gridiron Club of Dallas Chapter Athletics Director of the Year in 2009 and Legends Award recipient in 2014. He started his athletics career as the starting center for the 1943 and 1944 undefeated Garland High School regional champions. Johnson then went on to play at Texas A&M and North Texas. The backfield coach at Garland High School from 1949-1957, Johnson helped the Owls advance to the state finals in 1955 and win the Class AAA state championship in 1956. In 1958, he became Garland’s head football coach and guided the Owls to the 1960 Class AAA district championship.
