ROCKWALL, TX (August 28, 2014) The Rockwall City Council will be accepting applications from residents interested in serving on the city council in Place 2.
This vacancy will result upon Mayor Pro Tem Jim Pruitt assuming the role of mayor as a result of now Mayor David Sweet’s election to Rockwall County Judge, an office he will be sworn into just after the first of the year.
By city charter, vacancies on the council, other than the mayor, are filled by a majority vote of the remaining elected members for the unexpired term only, or until the next regular City election, provided the successor possesses all qualifications for the position.
The next municipal election is slated for Saturday, May 9, 2015. City Charter prescribed qualifications for filling a city council vacancy include the following:
- Must be at least twenty-one years of age at the time of the election for which they are filing.
- Must be a qualified voter.
- Must have resided within the corporate limits of the City, or recently annexed territory, for at least twelve months prior to the filing deadline.
- Must not, after notice of any delinquency, be in arrears in payment of taxes or other liabilities due the City.
- No candidate may file in a single election for more than one office or position as provided by this Charter.
- No employee of the City will continue in such position after filing for an elective office provided for in this Charter.
Applications may be submitted via the online Boards & Commissions electronic form, available at www.rockwall.com/boards. The council will determine the details of the application process in September. All applicants will be advised of process details as they become available. Updates will also be provided on the city website, or you may contact City Secretary Kristy Ashberry at (972) 771-7700 or by email at kashberry@rockwall.com.
