ROCKWALL, TX (September 4, 2014) To call the Boys and Girls Club of Rockwall County’s first ever Wing-a-thon a success would be quite an understatement; the celebrity contestants raised more than $4,000 for Boys & Girls Club kids during the highly entertaining event on Wednesday night at Buffalo Wild Wings in Rockwall.
Locals packed the restaurant to witness the Buffalo Wild Wings-sponsored wing eating contest consisting of two mayors, a mayor pro tem, a sheriff, a chief of police, a Chamber president, the BGC of Rockwall board chairman and an attorney vying for the Wing Crown. With a high-powered roster like that, and the main dining area of Buffalo Wild Wings at standing room only, the event was sure to feature a lot of crazy fun… and several messy, sweaty faces.
“This should be interesting,” Potter said prior to the start of the contest.
Acting as the celebrity contestants for the evening were:
-David Sweet, Rockwall Mayor
-Gary Moody, McLendon-Chisholm Mayor
-Justin Holland, Heath Mayor Pro-Tem
-Harold Eavenson, Rockwall County Sheriff
-Terry Garrett, Heath Chief of Police
-Dana Macalik, Rockwall Chamber of Commerce President
-Stephen Straughan, BGC of Rockwall County Chairman of the Board
-Tim Hartley, Law Office of Tim Hartley
Each contestant committed to raising funds for the BGC and had the option of either designating a “wingman” to chow down on their behalf or participate in the contest themselves. Contestants were not allowed to use napkins or to drink anything during the 15-minute challenge.
Each qualifying wing counted as one point, combined with the total amount of money raised per contestant. To count as a point, the bone of a wing had to be completely picked over with no meat or skin left (and just in case you’re wondering, the wings were medium temperature).
After 15 minutes of nonstop chewing, the crown went to the Rockwall Chamber’s Dana Macalik, who raised $1,060 and her wingman, Chris Harte, who ate 29 wings. Mayor David Sweet and his wingman, David White, earned runner-up honors with $886 raised and an impressive 39 wings eaten. Placing third were Gary Moody and his wingman with $863 and 23 wings consumed. Justin Holland earned the Rubber Chicken Award after eating the fewest wings; however, Potter said that despite a valiant effort, Tim Hartley and Holland “pretty much tied for last place. “
“On behalf of the Rockwall Chamber I would like to thank all the other contestants,” Rockwall Chamber President Dana Macalik said. “Part of the Chamber’s strategy is to support all the local nonprofits, and I’m extremely excited to support the BGC of Rockwall County.
“The Chamber Partners were also very supportive and gave big tonight. I also want to give a personal shout out to my wingmen, Chris Harte and Bryan Holloway, who ate for a good cause.”
The money raised during the event was most definitely a joint effort by community leaders and residents alike, as those who showed up hungry also had 10 percent of their bill go towards the programs offered at BGC of Rockwall County, to benefit hundreds of kids throughout the community.
