Rockwall Soroptimist join North Texas Giving Day

ROCKWALL, TX. (September 8, 2014) Soroptimist International of Rockwall is participating in North Texas Giving Day on September 18, raising money for their community programs. All donations over $25.00, given between 6:00 A.M. & midnight at www.NorthTexasGivingDay.org, will receive a bonus donation from Communities Foundation of Texas.

The group is encouraging supporters to donate that day so they can continue to help women and children in the community. Their current projects include the maintenance and operation of the Soroptimist House which currently houses Eloise’s Closet; a free clothing boutique for women in need or women  returning to the work force in need of appropriate attire for the interview or the job. Soroptimist Toasting Area Retired Seniors is a project that occurs once per quarter and at Christmas. The club celebrates the birthdays of the seniors living at Reese Manor, a low cost housing unit, with a themed luncheon and provide each with Walmart gift cards.

The club developed and annually provide a week long curriculum called We Expect Respect that teaches high school students about teen dating violence in 4 high schools. The curriculum was modified and is now also taught in 6 middle schools to address bullying. The club pays the facilitator who saw 1400 + students this past year.

The club continues to donate to the Helping Hands Clinic to pay for women’s healthcare and mammograms as well as children’s health needs.

Three High School scholarships are given annually to senior girls and a Live Your Dream Award is given to a female head of house going back to school. The club will be starting a Dream It-Be It program to assist high school girls in need.
