Diagnostic Sleep Center opens in Rockwall

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Rockwall expands healthcare offerings by adding a sleep center in Rockwall County.

ROCKWALL,TX(October 6, 2014) Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Rockwall announces the opening of their new sleep center on October 1, 2014. Sleep Specialties of Rockwall, located at2265 North Lakeshore Drivenext door to the North Rockwall ER, provides two sleep rooms with plans to increase the number of rooms in the future.  With the addition of a diagnostic sleep lab, Texas Health Rockwall will be able to provide enhanced healthcare services to area residents close to home.

Sleep disorders affect approximately 70 million people.  Sleep disorders include common conditions such as snoring and insomnia but also include potentially serious disorders such as sleep apnea and even restless leg syndrome.  People who have a sleep disorder often wake not feeling refreshed and experience daytime drowsiness or may also suffer from “brain fog” or confusion.

Don Ritchey, RRT, Director of Cardiopulmonary at Texas Health Rockwall expressed the organization’s commitment to the new service.

“As a hospital we routinely care for individuals after they become ill. However, we have evolved as an organization to prevent patients from becoming critically ill.  Diagnosis of a sleep disorder carries opportunities to intervene early on and prevent more serious illnesses from developing” Don Ritchey said.

Undiagnosed sleep disorders not only cause problems with an individual’s regular daytime routine but it can also negatively affect overall health.  People with obstructive sleep apnea actually stop breathing for short periods of time and are likely to experience a range of health problems, including the potential for death.  Cardiovascular disease is an example of the link that exists between sleep deprivation and overall health.  Interestingly sleep deprivation appears to be a risk factor of developing cardiovascular disease which, as the leading cause of death inTexas, affects many families.

In other instances, a sleep disorder may actually be a symptom of a larger medical condition therefore diagnosis of the root cause is of the greatest importance.  Disturbed sleep is common amongst diabetics and others with chronic disease.  While there are many reasons people struggle to sleep the possibility of a more serious underlying disease should always be ruled out.

While designed to look and feel like traditional bedrooms, the patient rooms still provide the technology needed to observe and evaluate individual sleep patterns.  The new sleep center is staffed with sleep specialists who monitor patients during their sleep appointment.  A number of important recordings are made throughout the period including heart rate and oxygen saturation.  Additionally, the sleep specialists will record any disturbances that occur.  The entire report is documented and sent to a Neurologist board certified in sleep medicine for evaluation so that appropriate follow up treatment can begin.
