Vets helping vets in Rockwall
ROCKWALL, TX (October 15, 2014) As a veteran of the United States Navy, Mike Chouteau, owner of Honda Cars of Rockwall, has a heart for veteran’s causes. Having served in the Navy for years, Mike says that he understands the struggles that veteran’s face, especially those seriously wounded.
“Even when I need something simple from the VA, it’s a process – anytime I can directly give back and bless a veteran, I do,” said Chouteau.
That’s exactly what Mike has chosen to do for Marine Cpl. Michael Fox – a new resident to Rockwall. Cpl. Fox was on his third deployment when he suffered the traumatic amputations of both of his legs in an IED blast in Musa Qala, Afghanistan on November 15, 2011.
The Fire Team Leader, Also Echo Co. 2nd Bn, 4th Marines, Cpl Fox and his men were looking for a suitable location to create a new patrol base. Upon entering a compound that looked like a good choice for the new base, Cpl Fox made his way to the top of a berm that appeared to have a good vantage point over the Wadi (dried creek-bed) and the surrounding hills. Turning to call to his designated marksman and alert him of the vantage point, Cpl Fox heard a blast as he was thrown into the air; dirt and darkness surrounding him. Hearing his squad calling to him, he realized that he could not move.
As the squad began administering life saving first aid, Fox learned that he had lost his legs. With four tourniquets in place, and a Landing Zone secured, a helicopter was able to transport him to Camp Bastion. Falling unconscious shortly after arriving at the local hospital, Cpl Fox was next transported to Landstuhl, Germany where he endured multiple surgeries while in the ICU to stabilize him for his eventual transport stateside.
Arriving at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, Michael endured many more surgeries over the course of the next month. Eventually transferred to Balboa Naval Medical Center in San Diego for treatments and therapies, Cpl Fox remained there until his retirement. He will move into his Rockwall home in early December.
Chouteau and Cpl. Fox have never even met but upon hearing about the cause Chouteau decided he needed to help out.
“This is an incredible opportunity to live in a specially adapted home designed to meet my specific needs – a place to call my own. I will be able to be financially sound and can pursue my hopes and dreams all with an improved daily quality of life,” said Fox.
In order to help the cause, Chouteau has created a promotion for the month of October named “Vets Helping Vets.” For every car he sells to a veteran he will donate $200 to the builders of Cpl. Fox’s home. Mike has taken it a step further and has guaranteed a donation of $5,000.
“Whether we sell one car or 100 cars, Honda Cars of Rockwall will guarantee a minimum donation even if I make up the difference,” said Chouteau. Anything raised above $5,000 will be donated to the cause as well.
Honda Cars of Rockwall will be donating the funds at a BBQ hosted at Eddie Deen’s located on Highway 205. The event will be held Saturday, November 8 on Veteran’s Day weekend. All profits from the gathering will also benefit Cpl. Fox. Cpl. Fox receives the keys to his home mid December donated to him through Homes For Our Troops by donations such as the one from Honda Cars of Rockwall and events like those at Eddie Deen’s BBQ.
