Iron Chef Challenge cooks up fun to help Rockwall County Boys & Girls Club kids

ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX (October 23, 2014) The participants of the 2014 Iron Chef Challenge fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Rockwall County donned their chef toques and aprons (and thinking caps at that) to serve up a smorgasbord of delicious dishes and crazy fun skits this past weekend.

This year’s competitive and entertaining fundraiser featured several teams made up of businesses, organizations and municipalities from around the county teaming up with North Texas area celebrity chefs, vying for the Iron Chef trophy as well as bragging rights until next year’s event comes around. The teams competing in the challenge included the City of Rowlett, the City of Fate, the City of Heath, Heath Salon and Spa, American National Bank, the Duck Regatta, BB&T Bank, Lake Pointe Hospital, Summit Financial, Ebby Haliday, Rockwall Summer Musical, Kiwanis Club of Rockwall, Soroptimist International, JHF-LLC, Toyota of Rockwall and Crowd Reason.

Rockwall Mayor David Sweet and Billy Quinton of QBall Design in Rockwall had a blast as the emcees of the evening, taking bribes from the teams, sampling the food and pounding out trivia left and right throughout the two-hour cooking period.

“The Iron Chef competition is an event that is fun for all members of the community,” Mayor Sweet said. “It’s a great opportunity for all different organizations to come together and get to know each other, compete, laugh and just have a good time as well as contribute financially to an organization that’s entire  purpose is to take care of the kids throughout all of Rockwall County.

I’m so proud of the job Misti Potter and her staff does in enriching the lives of the kids in our community.”

“The Iron Chef Challenge is one of the most fun events to emcee,” Quinton said. “Nothing goes better with good food than ridicule and embarrassing yourself… especially to help out those kiddos.  It’s an honor to do the event each year and we’re blessed to have Misti Potter doing all the heavy lifting. It shows the priorities of all the great communities and organizations in our area, and I’m very proud to be a part of it.”

After the mad rush of the teams to gather ingredients, pots and pans, and other cooking utensils, they all set to work to create some rather unique and tasty dishes, including cornbread made with cinnamon and honey and bacon-wrapped steak. A whole manner of food was prepared from breakfast favorites to suppertime staples and beyond. Judges bribes comprised of anything from offering to bring food and/or drink to the emcees or judges to singing and dancing for points.

BGC Executive Director Misti Potter even got in on the singing action, giving a mesmerizing performance of Patsy Cline’s “Crazy.” Misti said the fundraiser was yet “another amazing and fun event” that raised more than $5,000 for over 150 local youth, and that the money will go towards providing daily after-school, educational, recreational and social activities for the kids.

The top winners of the night were as follows:

Iron Chef Award – City of Rowlett

Best Cooks in the County Award – City of Fate

Best Skit Award – City of Heath

Most Spirited Award – Heath Salon and Spa

Congrats to all of the winners and their celebrity chefs!
