ROCKWALL, TX (October 25, 2014) The Rockwall Community Band was established in 2002, with the support of many community members interested in developing a wind band in the Rockwall area. Today there are about 65 players who perform with woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments, conducted by Mike McGill and Associate Director Lewis Phelps.

The Rockwall Community Band will present its annual Christmas Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18 at First United Methodist Church in Rockwall, 1200 E. Yellow Jacket Lane. The band also presents a Spring Concert in May and a Patriotic Concert in July. In addition, the band participates in a Salute to Area Community Bands, a daylong recital – giving band members an opportunity to share experiences and hear the music of other local band organizations.

Each year, the Rockwall Community Band awards a scholarship to a local graduating senior who has shown musical ability and plans to major or minor in music. This year’s recipient is Rockwall High graduate Marley Jordan, who is studying at North Texas State University.

Membership is open to anyone who can read music, play an instrument, and is at least 15 years of age. Ability levels vary from professional musicians to those who “used to play” and dusted off their old instruments. There are no auditions. Membership is open at the beginning of each semester and any new season.

The band rehearses each Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Rockwall High School Band Hall.

“The Rockwall Community Band brings together such a varied and eclectic group of musicians. Our members are from all walks of life, and every member is always glad to give 100% each week to make our organization the best,” said McGill.

“I have been honored to direct the band the past 12 years along with Associate Director Lewis Phelps.  Together we have seen all of our members grow musically and develop into fine musicians. Please check our website if you have a love of music and are looking for that ‘special’ place to belong. We welcome all, and would love to have you join us.”
