US Open Triathlon, collegiate competition filled with ‘great energy’ in Rockwall, Heath

ROCKWALL, HEATH, TX (October 17, 2014) Hundreds of residents and visitors to the city of Rockwall were at the Harbor bright and early last Sunday morning to cheer on the triathletes and participants of the U.S. Open Triathlon, hosted by the cities of Rockwall and Heath.

The somewhat chilly morning gave way to mostly-clear skies and plenty of sunshine as spectators lined the race course near the marina at the Harbor to witness hundreds of triathletes dive into the calm waters of Lake Ray Hubbard to begin the competition, which also included a bike route rolling through the streets of Heath as well as a running route on Summer Lee Drive. For those of you who are wondering, the water’s temperature at start time measured in the low 70s, although many swimmers elected to wear wet suits.

The US Open Triathlon also served as the 2014-2015 SMW Collegiate Regional Series Championship event for collegiate triathletes in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The event capped off a fun-filled weekend in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area, and those in town to see the US Open Triathlon also could get their football fix with the Texas-Oklahoma Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, as well as check out the State Fair of Texas before it closes on Oct. 19.

“I thought the event went very well,” said Jack Caress, president of Pacific Sports and co-race director of the U.S. Open Triathlon. “There was really great energy from start to finish, and we couldn’t have asked for nicer race day weather. For me, the highlight was the collegiate competition. This group of competitors are the future of our sport and showed themselves to be great competitors. Congratulations to the [University of Texas] Longhorns for their team victory.

“The other highlight for me was the great cooperation between the cities, volunteers, ACTIVE and our other partners.  I don’t think we had any real negatives, and we had a strong first-year to build on for 2015.”

Congratulations to all the winners of the 2014 U.S. Open Triathlon and the 2014-2015 SMW Collegiate Regional Series Championship!
