Community meeting on emergency preparedness Dec. 1

ROCKWALL, TX (November 11, 2014) In the event of a disaster in our hometown, would you know what to do? Whether it’s a tornado, flood or other severe weather event, a chemical or biological emergency, a terrorist attack or an epidemic, there are trained professionals and volunteers throughout the area to help. But you are your own best protection.

Rockwall County Emergency Management, the Rockwall Ministerial Alliance and Blue Ribbon News have partnered to present a community meeting on emergency preparedness. Led by Joe Delane, Rockwall County Emergency Management Coordinator, the program will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1 at St. Matthias Catholic Church, 116 Kenway St. in Rockwall.

“Joe DeLane has done a great job of linking together the necessary resources in the event of a crisis in our community; he’s done a great job reaching out to the churches,” said Rev. Mark Irons of First Christian Church Rockwall, head of the Rockwall Ministerial Alliance. “This is a great outreach for the community, a joint effort held in a central location at St. Matthias – another step along the way in making sure our community is prepared. A crisis could happen here as well as any place in the world.”

DeLane said that Emergency Management relies on partnerships with the Alliance and other nonprofits. “We are trying to educate as many people within Rockwall County on how to be safe when disaster strikes,” he said.

Community Emergency Response Team members (CERT) will be on hand. These citizens have been trained to recognize, respond to, and recover from a major emergency. Ham radio operators will also be in attendance. Because ham radios are not dependent on the internet or cell towers, they can provide a means of communication when all else fails. Everyone is encouraged to attend, to learn the steps you can take to safeguard yourself and your family.
