ROCKWALL, TX (November 5, 2014) Three Rockwall athletes left Denton this past weekend with gold medals earned from the North Texas Fall League Water Polo Championships.
Janelle Hummingbird and Kyle Fletcher helped power the Southlake 8th grade & under team to a clean sweep, winning all their games in a round robin bracket. They defeated Flower Mound 12-9, Denton 16-3 and St. Marks 16-5 for the gold medals.
Kyle Fletcher also helped the Southlake 10th grade and under to gold by sweeping the competition in that division as well. More impressively for Kyle was his performance with the 12th grade and under team in the finals versus St. Marks. Playing against high school athletes, he was able to record a steal, drew a kick out penalty foul on his defender and scored a goal in an 8-5 loss to St. Marks.
Jordan Hummingbird helped the Southlake 12th grade and under girls to gold by downing Denton 8-4, Flower Mound 10-6, then played the combined Denton/Flower Mound teams in the finals. With 40 seconds left and Southlake holding on to a slim 10-9 lead, Jordan found the back of the net to secure a 2 goal advantage. This proved to be the game winner as the game ended 11-10.
“It was a great weekend for the kids as they are continually improving,” said parent Jim Hummingbird. “Playing up for these young athletes is allowing them to play faster as well as gain confidence in their games. I can only see good things ahead for these water polo athletes.”
