Rockwall DA Kenda Culpepper to address family violence at free program

ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX (Jan. 13, 2015) Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper is scheduled to speak at a free event sponsored by Rockwall-based Americans Ending Abuse and its charitable arm, the Lillian Smith Family Violence Foundation at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Gonino Center For Healing, 6720 Horizon Road in Heath.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting to learn what is fueling an increase in family violence crimes, and how and where to get help.

Rockwall single mother and recent domestic violence victim Brittany Barnhill-Richards will describe her experiences with an abusive ex-boyfriend and why she filed charges against him.

Representatives from Rockwall and Heath Police Departments are also expected be on hand to help answer questions.

According to a press release by The Rockwall News, Culpepper said that an increase in family violence crime in Rockwall County is what caused her to apply for and recently receive an $80,000 grant from the North Central Texas Council of Governments to hire a new family violence prosecutor. Rockwall County Commissioners pitched in $11,000 to help cover the total cost. The Rockwall News reported that Rockwall Police are also hiring an additional family violence officer.

Americans Ending Abuse and the Lillian Smith Family Violence Foundation work to reduce domestic, dating, child and sexual abuse crimes, plus provide support services for abuse crime victims.
