ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX (Jan. 18, 2015) The Rockwall County Historical Foundation and Rockwall County Historical Commission recently announced the schedule for the Sheri Stodghill Lecture Series 2015.
The Sheri Stodghill Lecture Series (formerly called Brown Bag Lecture Series) presents programs of historical interest from noon to 1 p.m. in the third floor courtroom at the historic downtown Courthouse in Rockwall. Lectures are free and open to the public.

Friday, February 13 – ALL AROUND TOWN
Long time Rockwall resident Patty Canup, will share fond recollections ofRockwallCounty, including schools, Aluminum Plant, and generations of family heritage.
Friday, March 13 – FLORENCE RANCH and LAWRENCE HOMESTEAD
Established in the 1870s, these two THC landmark properties are representative of a step back in time. Florence Ranch onBarnes Bridge Rd.continued operation until 1976. TheLawrencefamily continually occupied their home place until 1995. Hear the rich history of both these active, civic minded families.
Friday, April 10 – TERRELL STATE HOSPITAL
In 1883, Terrell rancher and banker, Col Jim Harris, offered 672 acres for the location of a facility that would become known as North Texas Lunatic Asylum. Opening in 1885 with 330 patients, Terrell State Hospital continues to provide care for psychiatric needs of patients.
Friday, May 8 – DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER
Born in Denison, TX in 1890, the son of an MKT railroad worker, Eisenhower graduated from West Point and served as the Commanding General of the U. S. forces in the European theatre during WWII. “Ike” became the 34th President of theUnited States in 1953 and the first President born inTexas.
Friday, September 11– ROCKWALL DAY AT THE FAIR
From its beginning in 1886, the Dallas State Fair attracted visitors because of its agricultural emphasis. Explore the history of the State Fair of Texas, including memorabilia of the 1936 Centennial Celebration.
Friday, October 9 – PARKER CEMETERY
Jan Willess Johnson will share information about one of the oldest cemeteries in Rockwall. ParkerCemeteryis the final resting place for some of the county’s earliest settlers, the Truitt, Hays, Orr, Collins, Parker and Willess families.
Friday, November 13 – SAM RAYBURN
In 1887, W.M. Rayburn’s family moved to a 40 acre cotton farm inFannin County,TXwith their five yr. old son. “Mr. Sam” became one of TX best known statesmen. First elected to the U. S. House of Representatives in 1913, he served 48 years of continual service. He built his Bonham home in 1916.
Friday, December 11 – THE ROCK WALL REVISITED
This popular annual program will re-examine the history of the rock wall and the most recent developments regarding Rockwall’s unique underground formation.
