Rockwall High’s Model United Nations Club earns RISD Diversity Leadership Award

ROCKWALL, TX (Feb. 12, 2015) Congratulations to the Rockwall High School Model U.N. Club.  They are the recipients of the 2014/15 RISD Diversity Leadership Award – Student/Student Group.

Model U.N. is a relatively new group at RHS, but as such has consistently worked towards understanding from both micro and macro perspectives.  Rachel Shafer, a junior at RHS, founded the group.  She wanted to participate in Model United Nations as a way to exercise her responsibilities as a world citizen.  She reached out to Ms. Grosshuesch as the club sponsor and created the Rockwall Model United Nations.

Rachel recruited students from varying backgrounds who shared an interest in learning how to create a peaceful and harmonious world, and she provided the elbow grease to keep these diverse students working towards a common goal.  These students are diverse, hailing from the Far East, The Caribbean, Latin America, and Africa. Her vision has created a group that is a microcosm of the United Nations in that its members come from different worlds.

This group meets with similar groups from around the metroplex to represent countries from around the world and to grapple with the same problems that the United Nations strives to solve.  These students come to the process with a wide range of ideas and understandings and therefore must negotiate with each other regarding the best way to simplify, compromise, and still maintain strong ethical standards.  As these students work to understand each other they also work to understand how global relations can be strengthened via respect, tolerance, and acceptance.  By using the Model United Nations format they practice real skills for a real world and model these skills for their classmates, their school and for Rockwall.
