ROCKWALL, TX (Feb. 16, 2015) Instead of reveling in the typical Valentine’s celebrations filled with excesses of chocolates and stuffed animals, senior students at Rockwall Christian Academy delivered special greetings to the residents at nearby Rowlett Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Over the past week, students in every grade spent their art class time cleverly hand-crafting over 150 red and pink cards, bedecked with cutouts, stamps, ribbons, and glitter, and inscribed with everything from poetry to sweetly simple kindergarten attempts at “I love you!”
“I asked them to imagine they were writing a valentine to their own grandparents,” said art teacher Dr. Rosalyn Williams about the various inspirations that developed across so many different creations.
As one of many service projects the Class of 2015 selected for the year, the project brought many smiles to both sides–both giving and receiving.
“It gave us perspective of the love and attention that they lack,” said RCA Senior Sarah Edwards, as the group of students piled back into the cars when the deliveries were finished. “The fact that we were able to bring them joy and to tell them that they are loved really touched me. I hope that more people will realize what a treasure our elders are and we need to treat them that way because they are our history.”
