(ROCKWALL, TX – March 27, 2015) Hey batter, batter! The Kiwanis of Rockwall County fired up its spring Angel League baseball season on Wednesday at the Leon Tuttle Athletic Complex, where boys and girls with special needs had the opportunity to swing for the fences!
The Angel League is a baseball program for boys and girls ages 4-15 with special needs, and includes T-ball for the small fry and coach pitch for more advanced players. The club also has an adult coach pitch team for ages 16 – 60. Rules of the league have been adapted so that there are no strikes or outs, and each child scores with every hit, even if the ball goes 10 feet or 100 feet. The league doesn’t keep score, so every team wins!
Any child with disabilities may play, and the Rockwall Kiwanis welcome siblings and youth from local high schools to assist their players in hitting and mobility around the field, so that even players with walkers, wheelchairs or other mobility issues can join the action.
The 9-week-long spring and fall seasons conclude with an awards ceremony celebrating the players and their accomplishments on the field at the end of the last game. After all, the Angel League celebrates who your child is, not what he isn’t!
The Kiwanis of Rockwall County provide all the uniforms and gloves free of charge, while the City of Rockwall Parks Department provides the baseball fields and all other equipment. Local businesses also get involved by providing the team with season-end trophies and professional photography (team and individual).
